Causes of Halitosis – A Basic Guide to What Causes Halitosis

While most of us think stinky breath is caused by eating onions and garlic the real causes of Halitosis are a little more serious. In case you didn’t know, Halitosis is the medical word for bad breath and while not everyone may recognize the word, most of us can recount a time when we experienced the bad breath of another individual. We can often take a negative view of that person and may avoid talking to them in future. What can be more upsetting is that if we are actually the one with bad breath and we fear that people are taking this negative view of us.

It is for that reason that we usually want to get rid of halitosis as soon as possible. However, eliminating bad breath is simply not simply a case of avoiding that onion beagle during your lunch hour. The actual causes of halitosis have little to do with the food we eat but rather bacteria that live in the mouth.

We all have bacteria that live the mouth. These bacteria tend to colonize the back of the tongue where there are groves between the taste buds for them to live and less oxygen in the environment. As a natural part of their metabolism they consume proteins and excreted waste products in the form of volatile sulpher compounds.

Unfortunately it is these volatile sulpher compounds that cause the stinky smell of halitosis. They readily evaporate at room temperatures which allows them to diffuse into the breath and the surrounding air which can become an embarrassing problem when in intimate social situations.

Therefore, Halitosis is caused by allowing excess amounts of these bacteria to grow. We can do this inadvertently if we fail to floss and brush properly, if we do not clean the tongue and if we allow the environment within the mouth to become dry and acidic. By addressing these causes of halitosis we stand a much better chance of solving this embarrassing problem.
