One of the ways your daughter needs your help is to distract her when she is anxious. Her anxiety can occur at the dinner table, trying on clothes at the mall, seeing her reflection in the mirror or someone she perceives is thinner than she is. It can hit her before she even gets out of bed in the morning because she is thinking about what to wear and how she will look in it.
You have to teach her how to deal with this emotional distress. I’ve heard that distress tolerance is about getting through a crappy moment without making things worse. That is a great way to describe what your daughter needs from you; assistance to get through a crappy moment without acting on destructive eating disorder behavior.
Here are a couple of distraction ideas for getting her through crappy moments:
* Use activities like hobbies, puzzles, crafts, doodle art, paint by numbers or just paint and paper, clay, computer games, or researching a topic of interest on the internet. The goal is to engage the mind on a different topic and doing something that requires the use of her hands is all the better. Have activities on hand that you can use when she needs them.
* Help her figure out something she can do for someone else. An act of kindness will not only encourage the recipient, but will make her feel better too. Maybe an elderly neighbors lawn needs raked. You can send one of your friends out on self care date while your daughter watches her children for an hour. How many moms would jump at the chance to get groceries without the kids along?
These are just a few ideas; there are many more. You know your daughter best and what she enjoys. Help her brainstorm a list of ideas she can choose from when those crappy moments come. Then all she has to do is go look at the list and choose one.
